NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 15 – The Ministry of Education now say it has identified cartels involved in exam malpractices in some parts of the country.
Speaking at the Kenya School of Government after meeting County Directors on this year’s exam preparedness Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said they would ask the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and that of the Inspector General of Police to deal with the culprits.
“Any person found in breach of examination regulations will be arrested and charged. We have identified several examination cartels that have been involved in the sale of fake papers; I will engage with my colleagues in the Interior Ministry, the Director of Public Prosecution and the Attorney General to deal with proceeds accrued from this illegal exercise, “she said.
Mohamed said a multi-sectoral team would be put in place to process cheating cases and outline disciplinary measures.
She further said some centres have been put under high surveillance after intelligence reports of planned cheating emerged.
“So far we have placed 30 examination centres under high dependency surveillance and 192 under amplified surveillance based on reported examination malpractice trends from 2015 to 2017,” said CS Mohammed.
She however assured that the 2018 national examinations have not leaked and will not leak.
During the meeting, sub-county directors were each presented with keys to secure and ensure they open and close examination containers every day during the examination period.
A total of 224 security officers will escort examination materials from the KNEC warehouse to the examination storage facilities in the sub-counties.
Education Permanent Secretary Belio Kipsang also warned teachers and parents who aid in cheating that they would have their certificates recalled as part of disciplinary measures.
