TV personality’s fiance arrested over murder of woman in Kilimani

According to a detective privy to the arrest, the suspect was found with gunshot wounds/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 25 – A suspect linked to last week’s murder of a 29-year-old woman whose body was found in a bathtub in Nairobi’s Kilimani area has been arrested.

A senior DCI officer at Kilimani Police station has told Capital FM News that they are treating Joe Irungu who has a gunshot wound as the prime suspect in the murder of Monica Kimani.

The suspect has been identified as the fiancé to a TV personality who got engaged recently.

“We have the suspect in custody. We have every reason to believe the suspect was involved in the murder,” the senior officer said, “we are also trying to ascertain if he was shot or inflicted the wound on himself because the story he is giving is not consistent.”

The body of Monica who operated her family business in South Sudan was found in a bathtub, with her throat slit and her hands tied to the back.

According to reports, she was scheduled to visit Dubai.

Her body was discovered by her brother who had unsuccessfully tried to phone her and opted to visit her house only to stumble on her body.

Police said they narrowed down to three individuals who were last in the deceased’s house and that is how they settled on the man who is known to operate between Nairobi and Dubai where he is said to be working in the security sector.

One of the people who had gone to the house, police said, is Monica’s neighbour who visited and left while the other runs errands and went there to deliver a parcel.

“We interrogated the two and based on their accounts, we were able to narrow down to this particular suspect,” the detective said, adding, “we also relied on phone locations.”

Police said they have also confirmed that the man used a fake identity card at the main gate, and was wearing a gown when he visited, suggesting he may have had a bad motive.

And when the suspect was arrested, he had a gunshot wound and claimed that he was shot somewhere in Lang’ata, but police have confirmed that there was no shooting at the particular location.

The suspect was being treated in hospital on Tuesday under police guard.
