, NYERI, Kenya Sep 30-Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has said that maize farmers will be paid from Tuesday next week through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

Kiunjuri, however, added that all the farmers that the government owes will receive their dues except the ones who have not been cleared by the Cereals and Produce Board.

“As a Government, we must ensure that we pay all farmers we owe except the ones who have cases,” he said.

He further said that the farmers play a vital role in ensuring Kenyans have enough supply of maize flour and thus the government must honor its pledge of clearing the debt.

Speaking at Kiamuiru in Nyeri County, Kiunjuri also called on millers to reduce the price of the 2kg of maize flour to Sh75.

“The price of a 90kg bag of maize has reduced to Sh1600, a 50 per cent reduction from last year’s prices. I am calling on millers to reduce the price of the 2kg Unga,” he said.

This comes few days after Senators met with some farmers in Uasin Gishu last week where they aired their frustrations for not being paid for maize already taken to the NCPB.

The Government owes the farmers sh. 3.5 billion.
