Governor Obado in court over murder of his lover Sharon

Obado has been in custody since Friday when he was arrested after recording a statement for the second time with detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 24 – Migori Governor Okoth Obado was taken to court Monday over the murder of his lover Sharon Otieno, who was a student at Rongo University.

Obado was arraigned alongside his Personal Assistant Michael Oyamo who was the first to be arrested two weeks ago over the killing.

Obado has been in custody since Friday when he was arrested after recording a statement for the second time with detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

He was taken to court early but the court session was postponed to 11am when he is expected to take plea over Sharon’s death.

Five other suspects, among them, two of Obado’s bodyguards are also in custody over the murder.

One of the bodyguards was arrested on Monday morning, while the others, who include a taxi driver were arrested last week.

“Zacharia Okoth Obado-Governor of the County of Migori to be charged with the offense of aiding and abetting the commission of the felony termed murder. Michael Juma Oyamo- Personal Assistant to the Governor to be charged with the offense of murder. Caspal Ojwang Obiero – Personal assistant to the governor to be charged with the offense of aiding and abetting the commission of the felony termed murder,” Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji said in a statement Sunday.

Police are still looking for three men said to have been hired to kill Sharon, whose body was found dumped in a forest a day after her abduction.

She had been kidnapped with Nation journalist Barack Oduor who is a star witness in the case.
