NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 3 – Seven officials from the Tana River and Mombasa County Governments are due in court on Friday over the fraudulent award of a tender worth Sh30 million.

This follows their arrest by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday after they received a report by the Tana River County Government.

“In 2016, EACC received a report from Tana River County indicating that there were some procurement irregularities in Tender no TRCG/51/2016-2017 – purchase of 100 collapsible water tanks worth 30 Million by the Tana River County Government,” a statement from EACC stated.

A probe by the anti-graft body confirmed that the budgeted amount for the purchase of these tanks was Sh5 million yet the signed contract was for Sh30 million.

It further stated that the firm that was awarded the tender did not have the basic mandatory requirements like registration certificate from the National Construction Authority.

The anti-graft body said it is pursuing three other suspects and once arrested will also be arraigned in court.
According to EACC, the firm that was awarded the tender did not also make acceptance for the award.

It further pointed out that the Tana River County Procurement Officer did not make a professional opinion as prescribed by the law before the tender was awarded.
