NAIROBI, Kenya, July 19 – The Nairobi County Government on Thursday morning demolished the Mutindwa market situated in the Buruburu area of Nairobi.
Chief of Inspectorate Peter Mbaya told Capital FM News that this is part of an operation to bring down illegal structures in the county.
He stated that traders had been given notice as early as April and had been cautioned to vacate the area ahead of the exercise.
“This is an exercise that was long overdue. We had given them notice in ample time and once we start, we will not stop until all illegal structures in the areas have bene brought down,” he stated.
Some who did not heed the warning scrambled to save their belongings after being tipped off by their colleagues about the exercise, which kicked off at about 3am.
“I do not know what I will do now. This was my livelihood and now it is gone. The government should consider us as they undertake this exercise,” stated Beatrice Njoki, a trader based at Mutindwa market.
