3 more suspects arrested over the SIM swap fraud

Kenyans walking on the streets of Nairobi: Members of the public have been warned against divulging their personal information to strangers.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 25 – Police have arrested three more suspects in connection with the recent spate of SIM swapping cases targeting subscribers.

Through its Twitter account, the National Police Service said one of the key suspects is a Customer Care Executive at Safaricom, who has since been dismissed.

Joseph Kuria Kariuki, Grace Wanjira and Meshack Okoth Okuta were arrested on Tuesday.

They are being investigated over a fraud case reported by Kiambu MCA who said he lost Sh1.9 million through fraud.

Members of the public have been urged “to refrain from giving personal data to individuals claiming to be calling from mobile telephone firms or responding to strange calls or messages asking for the same.”

“Detectives are closing in on leads that may lead to the arrest two more suspects one of them an employee with a local bank where the complainant had banked his money,” the police statement said.
