Search for persons missing from Solai dam tragedy enters day 3

The Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui fielding questions from members of the press at the command centre/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 12 – The search for missing persons at the Solai dam entered day three on Saturday with the military and emergency workers sifting through mud and debris in search of some 40 people still missing.

This is after the dam burst its banks, sending muddy waters raging through homes and killing 45 people in Solai.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti has already launched a probe into the collapse of the dam as questions mount over the quality of construction of the private reservoir on a vast farming estate owned by an Asian farmer.

A multi-agency team comprising the military, police and the National Youth Service has been draining water from two adjacent dams to avert a disaster after experts warned of the danger the water posed.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the displaced families are in dire need of food and other items because their homes were flattened by the raging waters from Patel dam that had a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters.

The raging waters wiped out two villages, leaving a trail of destruction in what the Kenya Red Cross said displaced more than 500 families.
