NAIROBI, Kenya May 10 – The Government now claims it has distributed food worth 600 million shillings to flood victims across the country.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho has said the amount is part of the government’s efforts to salvage the situation that has left thousands marooned by floods in the country.

In a statement, the PS noted that the government has also supplied large quantities of medicine to avert the spread of diseases in affected areas.

Kibicho further assured that the government will step up its efforts in aiding affected residents by supplying food and medicine.

The heavy rains experienced in most parts of the country continue to wreak havoc leaving behind a trail of destruction of both property and human lives.

Just Wednesday night alone, at least 10 people were confirmed dead and tens of others unaccounted for after a massive dam collapsed in Nakuru destroying several homes in the process.

The victims, among them children were swept away by raging waters as they slept in their houses unaware of the dangers upstream.

In the meantime, the government continues to urge those living in flood prone areas to move to higher grounds.
