NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 – Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has asked residents of several residential areas in the city’s Eastlands suburb to provide documents that will enable the County Government process their title deeds.
Nairobi County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Urban Planning and Housing Charles Kerich pledged to facilitate the process to ensure timely completion.
According to Kerich, the estates whose titles are being processed include Dandora, Kayole, Umoja, Kariobangi, Mathare, Huruma and Ngei.
“The residents of these areas that were known as Site and Service Schemes are as close to receiving their title deeds now than ever before. We need their cooperation and we will soon be presenting the land ownership documents to them,” he said.
More than 50,000 people are scheduled to receive title deeds. More than 30,000 are on county property and the rest on land that was allocated by the National Government. The allocations were made in the 1970s and 1980s, but the residents have never received title deeds.
Nairobi County staff have been undertaking a rigorous process to verify the authenticity of the documents provided by the residents, to ensure only genuine land owners get title deeds.
Kerich pledged to initiate a process to digitize all county land records and set up a modern lands registry for Nairobi.
Embakasi North Sub County Administrator Stephen Kosgei said the area has a unique problem of condominium properties, where up to four properties are constructed on one small plot that has not been subdivided. The title document therefore has to capture the details of all the property owners on the one plot, taking into consideration the common areas.
“This is a challenge that appears unique to this area. I am appealing to the lawyers who are involved with the titling process to give us legal advice on how to handle this,” he said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Ministry of Lands to work closely with the Nairobi County Government to process the documents. Through the President’s directive, the Survey of Kenya has waived survey fees for the project areas.
