NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – A woman and her son escaped death on Wednesday night after a man set their house on fire using petrol, in Kiharu Constituency within Murang’a County.

The man wanted to kill his wife and son, who are already separated from him following a prolonged family dispute.

Despite the separation, the man has however refused to let go of them and police say he has been issuing threats to his wife.

Detectives in Murang’a have launched a massive search for the man who escaped after the incident.

This comes a day after a Kiambu man killed his entire family and set his house on fire, in a rising trend of such cases attributed to economic hardships and infidelity among spouses.

But in Kiambu’s incident, preliminary investigations have revealed that the man was conned more than Sh1 million in a deal that never materialized.

He had borrowed a huge chunk of the cash according to relatives and had promised to return the money early this year, but he was not able to do so.

The man had desperately wanted to meet his mother a day before he committed the heinous act.

His mother Cecilia Karuiru on Tuesday said her son had insisted on meeting her on Monday but did not divulge more details, but due to other commitments, she wanted to visit him on Tuesday.

“He said he cannot release more details on phone and urged me to arrive early at his Thika residence,” she said of the Sunday evening call.
