Matatu driver who disregarded Nyeri mourners pleas to slow down killed together with fares

Those who survived the accident told Capital News that their driver ignored pleas to slow down/CFM

NYANDARUA, Kenya, Jan 10 – The number of those killed in a road accident on Tuesday night on the Nyeri – Nyahururu road near Ndaragwa has now risen to eight.

Five people among them the driver and a child died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital.

Some of the survivors claimed the driver had on several occasions ignored calls not to overspeed before the 14-seater matatu rolled several times killing four people on the spot.

“We would like to appeal to all drivers to be careful especially when they are driving as over speeding causes a lot of accidents. It seems that the Michuki rules are not being adhered to and this is making the situation worse,” one of the survivors stated.

Several other victims are recuperating at the same hospital with serious injuries they sustained in the 7.30pm accident.

The victims were travelling from Nyeri for a funeral, but on reaching Kianugu area near Ndaragwa forest, the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road.

Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni and several local leaders who visited the scene and the victims at the Nyahururu hospital regretted that accident and called on drivers to observe caution to avert such fatal accidents.

Kioni noted that over the holidays, no such incidents were reported in the area and regretted how it occurred at the beginning of the year.

The leaders condoled with the families and wished the casualties quick recovery while urging the government to move with speed and crack the whip on reckless drivers.

The accident occurred even as President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an immediate withdrawal of National Transport and Safety Authority officers from the road and leave the work of enforcement of order on the roads to the police.
