NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7- A patient has been arrested after he shot a nurse dead at the Chiromo Lane Medical Centre in Nairobi’s Westlands area.
Police say the patient, a licensed gun holder, has a mental condition and had been rushed to the medical centre on Wednesday night by a relative.
He is said to have opened fire at the nurse who was attending to him, having insisted on keeping his gun after refusing to surrender it to the hospital’s security personnel.
“Why did they allow him to go inside with a gun?” Christopher Gisiri, a family friend to the deceased asked.
Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome says the suspect is in custody and will face murder charges in court.
The nurse was shot in the head and died instantly.
“We are yet to establish the circumstances of the incident, but what I can say authoritatively his firearm killed the nurse,” Koome told Capital FM News.
Kevin Muringe, the nurse charge of the facility told police that he found, “the patient shouting for help whereas the deceased nurse was lying in a pool of blood with a gun wound on the head and a shot gun on the top of the table.”
He was to relieve his colleague, the nurse who was killed, who had been on the day shift.
