Pangani Girls student Naomi Karimi tops 2017 KCSE exams

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – The top student in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations Naomi Karimi says she was caught by surprise by the announcement as she did not expect to beat her peers.

Karimi who was a student at the Pangani Girls High School attributed her success to sheer hard work and support from both her parents and teachers.

She stated that her love for technical subjects especially Maths, Physics and Chemistry will now enable her to pursue her dream course of civil engineering at the University of Nairobi.

“I am just so happy and I cannot believe it but all glory goes to the lord. I just got a text from somewhere else that I am the best girl in the country. I trusted in God, my parents pushed me on, they were my constant encouragement and the teachers were so supportive. I loved all subjects but I was inclined more to Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry,” she stated.

“The teachers were so dedicated and they gave us discussion groups where we encouraged each other. Team work was key. Pangani is a good school and my fellow students there should grab every opportunity they have. Their dreams are valid,’” she said.

Her school was also singled out by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi as the best improved school in the country.

“Overall, Pangani Girls is the most improved school in performance this year. What is most impressive is that we have County and Extra County Schools, which have performed well. This shows that when we are very honest in the things we do, we perform well,” the CS stated.

Overall, Matiangi noted that girls performed better than boys in this year’s examinations.

Karimi led the country’s candidates by getting a mean score of 87.01.
