News of Nyenze’s death shocks as leaders remember his strength

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – Various leaders have described the late Kitui West MP Francis Nyenze as a dedicated and out-spoken leader who always stood by what he believed was good for his constituents and the nation.

NASA principals led by leader Raila Odinga paid tribute to the legislator stating that it was a tragic moment for the Nation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We wish to convey heartfelt sympathies and sincere condolences to the people of Kitui West and the country at large at this tragic moment. Nyenze served the people of Kitui West and the country with dedication cumulatively for decades,” they said.

The leaders stated that Nyenze steered opposition MPs in the National Assembly in a difficult period between 2013-2017 through very careful balancing.

“We know that his passing fills Kitui West constituents and NASA family with powerful emotions, given the countless ways in which he served the nation and the constituency as MP, Minister, and Leader of Minority at different times in his career.”

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua stated that his death was received with shock as his health seemed to be improving.

“The Honorable Member has been sick for a long time from 2008. He had the cancer of the colon and was getting treatment here in the country and even outside. When he died, he was being treated at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted for one month,” he stated.

Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti said Nyenze was a person who was devoted to serving the people.

“We are shocked by his death although he has been ill for some time and was going through treatment. He was very strong and you saw that he even went through the campaign so what has happened has really surprised us and I am now praying for his family and telling them sorry,” she stated.

Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi said the legislature has lost a brave and selfless leader who served as an indefatigable former Minority Leader.

Nyenze was born on June 2, 1957 in Kabati, Kitui West and is a graduate of the University of Nairobi.

He was the Member of Parliament for Kitui West Constituency and the Minority leader in the 12th Parliament.

Signs of his failing health came to the fore when he was sworn in to the 13th Parliament with an oxygen tank strapped on his body.

He was a member of Wiper Democratic Movement but caused a storm when he, and former Wiper National Chairman, David Musila supported President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election in the August 8 polls.

In 2001 he was the Minister for Heritage and Sports having served as the Minister for Environment in 1997 when he was elected as the MP for Kitui West.
