NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1- Nairobi County Assembly has unanimously passed a motion prohibiting commercial sex.

The mover of the motion Mwangi Njihia who is the Member of County Assembly in Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course Ward said that the vice has led to increased immorality and sexually transmitted diseases among the young people.

“I am deeply concerned that this business is today happening rampantly and openly within our communities without repercussions on the offenders as provided for in law; this Assembly urges the Executive to move with speed and robustly enforce the provisions of the law to deter commercial sex in the County,” said Njihia.

The motion was seconded by nominated Member of County Assembly Mellab Atema who said that they should come up with ways on how to help young boys and girls vulnerable to this vice.

“We need to plan on how to get those involved in this business back to the society and rehabilitate them, however how hard it may seem we have to act,” said Atema.

The Members of the County Assembly supported the motion saying that most palatial homes and restaurants have been turned into brothels and have urged the county executive to strictly enforce city by-laws.

If implemented, Nairobi will become the first County to prohibit commercial sex in Kenya.
