, NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 – The Joint Select Committee on the election of members to the East African Legislative Assembly is expected to table its report in both Houses of Parliament Thursday afternoon for debate even as intense lobbying by the nominees continues to take shape.
A total of 27 nominees, 15 from the Jubilee side and 12 from the National Super Alliance are battling it out for the nine slots that Kenya have been allocated for representation in the Arusha-based regional assembly.
Parliament was to go on recess Thursday but legislators unanimously passed a motion to alter the calendar of the House and extended the sittings to Thursday next week.
The MPs are expected to conduct elections for the candidates next week before embarking on a long Christmas break and resuming back on February 13, 2018.
Kenya is the only partner state in the East African Community that has not submitted the names of its nine members for the regional assembly.
