NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 21 – The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the just released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results recalled over what it terms as irregularities in the marking process.
In a statement, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion stated that the marking process does not meet international standards of measurement and evaluation and should be thoroughly audited.
He indicated that it has destroyed the future of many children and the hopes of many families.
“There seems to be a deliberate effort to force more students to join tertiary institutions. Reduction in the number of students joining universities is an indicator of disaster. Something is wrong,” he stated.
He also pointed out that the Kenya National Examinations Council lacks credibility as it does not have a substantive Chief Executive Officer with all roles being taken over by the Chairman George Magoha and Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.
Sossion said the government was talking about a 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary and wondered why it was limiting transition from secondary school to university.
The release of the results caught many unaware as county directors and some heads of schools thought they had been invited for an ordinary meeting at Jogoo House.
The principals were then informed of a change of teh venue and they had to rush to Nairobi School with some arriving late.
Before the release of the results, President Uhuru Kenyatta was briefed by Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi and his team.
Matiangi said that the results show a normal curve as reforms in the exam system are entrenched.
President Kenyatta also directed Dr Matiangi to work with Attorney-General Githu Muigai to make presentations to the DPP so that cases of cheating involving more than 700 teachers countrywide are expedited.
