Death toll in Thika-Garissa road accident rises to 21

Chagach states that the matatu which was speeding had more than 20 passengers despite being a 14-seater vehicle/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 18 – The death toll following Sunday’s accident along the Thika Garissa Highway near Kilimambogo has now risen to 21.

According to Yatta Police boss Edward Chagach, five of those who perished in the accident were children.

Chagach states that the matatu which was speeding had more than 20 passengers despite being a 14-seater vehicle.

The matatu that was headed to Matuu from Thika collided head-on with a lorry that was heading towards Thika near Makutano in Kilimambogo.

Police say the accident occurred while the matatu was trying to avoid colliding with a motorcycle before ramming head-on with the lorry.

At the weekend, another 26 passengers were injured, one critically when the bus they were travelling in rolled on Nakuru-Eldoret Road.

They bus was ferrying Catholic youths from Burnt Forest to Subukia Shrine when the accident occurred.

According to a witness, the bus driver was trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming saloon car when he lost control.
