14 on AP lorry killed when driver swerved to avoid livestock in Baringo

NAKURU, Kenya, Dec 9 – Fourteen people among them Administration Police officers died on the spot when their vehicle rolled near Loruk in Baringo County.

The AP lorry was ferrying officers and residents from Maringat to Kapedo when it rolled near Loruk along the Marigat-Kapedo road.

The area Administration Police Commandant Robinson Ndiwa said those who perished on the spot were 13 adults and a child.

The accident occurred today at about 2pm

He said the driver of the lorry based at Kapedo Operation AP Camp was trying to avoid a herd of goats that were crossing the road when he lost control of the truck.

He said the first rescuers to arrive at the scene were Kenya Defence Forces personnel from the nearby Loruk Camp.

Ndiwa added the survivors who include five AP officers were taken to Kabarnet Level Four hospital for treatment.

“It is not yet clear how many people were on the lorry but I can confirm that five AP officers are among the survivors admitted at Kabarnet Hospital,” he said.

The County AP commandant said bodies of the victims were taken to the same hospital pending autopsies.

The lorry and officers had been dispatched to collect necessities for the Kapedo AP camp from Marigat.

Normally Residents in the area hike lifts from police vehicles for fear of attacks along the way.

There are few Public Service Vehicles in the rustling prone region due to insecurity.
