The temporary closure is to allow surface works along the section which is part of the upgrade of Ngong road phase 1 to a dual carriage from the National Library to Dagoretti Corner – a distance of 2.5 kilometres – at a cost of Sh1.3 billion.

According to KURA, phase one upgrade is 75 percent complete with construction of phase two (from Dagoretti Corner to Karen Roudabout) in the preparation stage.
