, NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 30 – The Jubilee Party and NASA have sent names of their nominees for the East African Legislative Assembly to Parliament, with the names featuring in the list of the two major coalitions mainly containing party loyalists and losers from the recent elections.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party on Thursday submitted 15 names of candidates while their NASA counterparts submitted 12 names to both Clerks of Parliament – Michael Sialai (National Assembly) and Jeremiah Nyegenye (Senate).
National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and his Senate counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen submitted the list on behalf of the Jubilee Party to the House in the morning session.
National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi and his colleague Moses Wetangula from the Senate presented the list on behalf of the Opposition.
While NASA chose to nominate close relatives of top coalition leaders like Raila Odinga’s brother Oburu and Kalonzo Musyoka’s son Kennedy, Jubilee submitted names of very close party loyalists like former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua and Mpuru Aburi who formerly represented Tigania East.
Others in the Jubilee list of 15 are former CIC Chairman Charles Nyachae and the former Clerk of the National Assembly Justin Bundi.
NASA’s list includes the coalition’s Chief Executive Officer Norman Magaya, Fatuma Ibrahim, Winfred Mutua among others.
Nomination papers for the Independent Candidates Munyuthe Mukoma, Esther Miano and Peter Shivule were however rejected since they did not met the requisite threshold that of collecting 1,000 signatures, a decision they protested.
The names will now be sent to Parliament for vetting. Jubilee will get five slots while NASA will get four.
