Police foil attempt to burn Kondele Police Station

Tensions had risen across the country ahead of the ruling, with violent clashes between opposition supporters and police in Nairobi on Friday/AFP

KISUMU, Kenya, Nov 20 – Police were forced to shoot in the air and lob teargas in Kisumu after youths attempted to burn down Kondele Police Station.

The two attempts were thwarted by hawk-eyed police officers who used water to put out the fire.

The officers’ patience run out forcing them to drive out the youths from the area after they barricaded the Kisumu-Kakamega Road with burning tyres.

Residents however had divided opinion on the protest that erupted following the Supreme Court validation of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.

Simon Amollo says the ruling caught him with surprise adding that what remains is to get word from NASA leader Raila Odinga.

James Maina, a resident of Kondele on the other hand said it is unnecessary to protest at the outcome of the ruling since NASA was not party to any petition at the Court.

Maina said the destruction of property following the burning of a vehicle in the area was unwarranted.

He said that the locals should calm down and return to their business instead of engaging in destruction of property.

Caleb Ouma however disagreed noting that as locals they must protest at the upholding of Kenyatta’s presidency.

Ouma said locals in the region did not cast their votes and will not recognise President Kenyatta as their leader.
