NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 22 – Herders from the Maasai and Samburu communities were tear gassed at Uhuru Park grounds in Nairobi earlier Wednesday as they prepared to launch a protest over the killing of more than 300 cows by police in Laikipia.

They were planning to demonstrate to the Office of the President at Harambee House but police say they had to be dispersed because President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta is operating from his city centre office.

Journalists also witnessed the confiscation of placards they were waving castigating the law enforcers for shooting their animals during a confrontation with bandits in the volatile region, where more than 50 people have been killed since the beginning of the year – including police officers.

The feud is fuelled by increased competition for land and resources as a result of population growth and a massive increase in the number of livestock in the region that has enormous tracts of land owned by white settlers and Kenyan elites.
