Governors close ranks to mourn a brother in arms

, NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7 – The deceased Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru who died in a road accident on Tuesday morning been remembered by other politicians as a leader who was visionary, cordial and warm.

Speaking at the Lee funeral home where the body of the late Gakuru now rests, Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru mourned the loss of an invaluable leader who “knew what he was doing.”

“We are extremely sad as governors to receive the news of the passing away of our colleague. It came as a shock,” she said.

“More than anything else, we like to pass our condolences to the people of Nyeri for losing a second governor,” she added.

She also described him as a good friend who had given invaluable insights when she was crafting her campaign strategy after deciding to vie.

“Gakuru is one of the people who helped me to craft a strategy when I had made up my mind to vie. He was a personal friend.”

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko remembered Gakuru as a courageous, jovial leader whom he interacted with during the short three months he was the governor of Nyeri.

“On behalf of the great people of Nairobi, my family, and myself, I would like to pass condolences to the family of Gakuru and pray to God to rest his soul in eternal peace,” he said.

The National super alliance (NASA) co-principal Moses Wetangula also passed his condolences to the family of the late Gakuru and the people of Nyeri for the untimely demise of their governor.

“I have received the news of his passing with shock. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the people of Nyeri. He was my friend and I have no doubt that he was going to lead the people of Nyeri well,” he said.

“We in the NASA fraternity are with the people of Nyeri and his family in this trying season. We share in their tragic loss.”

Other leaders who condoled with the family include Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, Kanini Kega, and the Nyeri deputy governor  Mutahi Kahiga who takes over.

Preliminary investigations show that the accident was caused by a tyre burst which caused the car veer off the road before it was torn into by the guard rails.
