Four killed in a failed attempt by bus driver to overtake stalled lorry at Salama

“The bus driver is believed to have miscalculated the distance when he decided to overtake”, said Muthui/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 13 – Four people died on the spot in road accident along the busy Mombasa –Nairobi highway on Monday morning.

Police say at least 11 other passengers were injured in the accident.

The accident involved a bus at Mlima Maziwa, a few meters from Salama Market, according to area police boss Charles Muthui.

“The bus was coming from Mombasa headed to Nairobi before hitting the back a lorry which had  suffered mechanical problems and was parked on the roadside,” said Muthui.

According to Muthui, the bus was overtaking when it collided with the lorry.

“The bus driver is believed to have miscalculated the distance when he decided to overtake”, said Muthui.

Those who have been injured were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital for treatment while the fatalities were taken to the Machakos Hospital morgue.

Muthui who has urged caution on the roads with the rains in mind, has attributed the accident to carelessness.

He has also urged passengers to always protest whenever they see drivers flout traffic rules and regulations.

The mangled wreckage of the bus was towed to Salama Police Station, and the lorry driven to the same place.
