President Kenyatta garnered 7,483,895 votes accounting for 98.26 per cent of the total votes cast/PSCU
NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 30 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has said Kenyans have revalidated his August 8 victory, after he was declared winner of the just concluded fresh presidential election.
President Kenyatta garnered 7,483,895 votes accounting for 98.26 per cent of the total votes cast.
In his acceptance speech, the President thanked the many voters who turned up in the fresh elections to exercise their democratic right despite violent intimidation.
“I celebrate our resilience as a nation. I celebrate the resilience of our democracy, the resilience of our people and the resilience of our institutions,” President Kenyatta said.
The President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by his running mate, Deputy President William Ruto, to the Bomas of Kenya where the results were declared, said other countries experiencing the turns and twists of the electoral process that Kenya has undergone recently would have burst asunder.
“But our democratic resilience will not tire. It will not give in to obvious provocations and a base invitation to politics of darkness,” the President said.
Announcing the election results, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati said his Commission worked under difficult conditions but managed to deliver a free, fair and credible election.
The IEBC Chairman pointed out that President Kenyatta got over 25 per cent of the votes cast in more than 24 counties.
President Kenyatta termed the narrative locally and internationally that the voter turnout was low as inaccurate and nothing but a history of political convenience and a tirade of conjuncture statistics.
“Here is the truth as recorded in our books. On August 8th, 15 million Kenyans came out to vote. Of these 8.4 million Kenyans voted for me. On October 26, 90 per cent of the same voters came out to support my Bid,” the President said, terming it a re-validation of the general will of the people of Kenya.
The President pointed out that the vote was a statement of the national intent of the people of Kenya in support of Jubilee as their government of choice, done within the confines of the rule of law and the constitutional imperatives.
“For those who voted for Jubilee by way of re-validating our August 8th victory, I thank you. Now we can begin the process of re-imagining our nationhood,” President Kenyatta said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional path and the rule of law.
President Kenyatta also spoke of his focus on improving the youth, saying in the next few days his pre-occupation will be with the 1.6 million young people who have spent 4 to 8 years preparing for secondary school and primary school exams.
“The future of our children should not be disrupted by our politics. My commitment is to ensure that the exams will continue as scheduled and that the future of our children is guaranteed,” President Kenyatta said.
The President once again appealed to Kenyans to embrace peace at all times, urging them to remain good neighbours.
