The fate of the other passengers remained unknown, with reports that the bus may have been carrying more than 50 people.
“The bus is still in water but the search is still on going to save lives and property,” Pius Masai, the deputy communications director at the National Disaster Management Unit said in a statement.
He said the 14 adults and 4 children rescued had been clinging on the bus roof for several hours to avoid being washed downstream from the bridge on the Kitale-Kainuk Highway which authorities declared unsafe.
The bus was headed to Lokichar in Turkana when it stalled on the bridge amid raging floods.
“The main challenges are terrain, water and strong currents and we are warning motorists and members of the public using or who may intent to use roads within that affected region to take precautions and avoid flooded areas,” Masai said.
