NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 12 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured Kenyans that he will do everything possible to ensure the country’s stability before, during and even after next month’s fresh presidential election.
In his address to the 12th Parliament Tuesday afternoon, President Kenyatta cautioned that his government will not put up with individuals who pose as a threat to the peace and stability of the country.
“I would like to make it abundantly clear that the government will not tolerate anyone intent on disrupting our hard won peace and stability,” said President Kenyatta.
In the joint sitting of both Houses that given a wide berth by Opposition lawmakers, the Head of State also appealed to the lawmakers to shun divisive politics that may plunge the country into political turmoil.
“I urge all political leaders to avoid engaging in divisive and destructive politics that have no place in modern Kenya,” he said.
President Kenyatta also assured the country and the legislators that there is no power vacuum, stamping his authority that he is still the President until a new one is sworn-in.
“I want to assure every Kenyan, and the world, that every Arm of Government is in place and operational. There is no void and there is no lacuna; Kenya is progressing along the path drawn for it by the Constitution,” said President Kenyatta.
On the subject of the Supreme Court verdict, he maintained that his decision to honor the Supreme Court ruling was out of respect for the Constitution, even though he disagrees with the judgement.
“I have previously demonstrated this fidelity to the best interests of the Kenyan people, as happened when I conceded the loss of an election in 2002. You will also recall that I heeded the summons from a foreign court even though I knew I was answering trumped-up charges,” said President Kenyatta.
The opening of the 12th Parliament sets the stage for both Houses of parliament to officially start executing their legislative mandate.
