NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 28 – Several University of Nairobi students were arrested Thursday, during daylong demonstrations against the re-arrest of Embakasi MP Babu Owino, who is their former leader.
The students engaged GSU officers in running battles since morning affecting normal activities around the institution’s hostels.
Traffic was also adversely affected along State House Road until the officers pursued the protesting group inside the institution.
They had barricaded the busy route and would hurl stones at motorists or members of public trying to use it.
“No Babu, no learning,” the would be heard chanting.
A motorcycle rider sustained injuries after he was hit with a stone on the head and was rushed to a city hospital.

Owino was re-arrested shortly after the court released him on a Sh500,000 cash bail and two sureties of Sh1 million each in a subversion case.
The MP was arrested for making derogatory remarks against the presidency.
The remarks were followed with protests in Kiambu County and sections of other Jubilee strongholds.
Owino’s counterparts in Parliament have condemned the MP’s remarks and asked him to offer an apology to Kenyans and the First Family.
Owino was on Thursday morning taken to Kibera Law Courts where was charged with causing grievous harm and use of force during the August 8 elections.
The MP appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani, where he has denied the two charges.
The prosecution wanted the MP to be denied bail while arguing that the charges are serious.
The first account, if proven, attracts a life sentence while the second under the elections Act is punishable with six years imprisonment or a fine of 1 million shillings.
He was released on a Sh200,000 cash bail or Sh500,000 surety bond.
