2017 KENYA ELECTIONS

Matiangi slightly alters schools calendar for fresh poll

The changes now mean that Form 1 to 3 students will break on October 24 with Form 4 candidates expected to remain behind to prepare for their national examinations/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 22 – Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has slightly altered the third term calendar for primary and secondary schools following the new October 26 date released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the fresh presidential election.

In a statement, Matiangi said the changes were informed by the fact that a number of schools will be used as polling centres for the election, a factor which prompted the ministry to make the necessary changes.

“Given a number of schools are gazetted as polling stations and tallying centres for the election, it has become necessary to make minor adjustments to the third term dates to free up the institutions for use during the important national exercise,” read part of his statement.

The changes now mean that Forms 1 to 3 students will break on October 24, with Form 4 candidates expected to remain behind to prepare for their national examinations.

Matiangi also said the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Home Science exam which was set to begin on the October 26 has been pushed to October 30.

Matiangi further said all primary schools will close on October 25, with the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) rehearsals expected to begin on October 30 ahead of their examination that will start on October 31 and conclude on November 2 as per the timetable earlier released.
