Jubilee MP petitions Judicial Service Commission for removal of CJ Maraga

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 14 – Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has petitioned the Judicial Service Commission for the removal of Chief Justice David Maraga.

Wambugu has equated the nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s August 8 win to judicial coup for which he holds Maraga responsible.

“I am convinced that the Chief Justice is a player deliberately or unknowingly in a coup against the President of the Republic of Kenya,” he told reporters outside the Supreme Court on Thursday after delivering his petition.

He claims the nullification of the win was influenced by the same civil society groups he alleges engineered the International Criminal Court cases President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto faced.

“He exerted undue influence over the others (members of the Supreme Court bench who were in favour of the nullification) and as far as I’m concerned, his decision is a culmination of a process of regime change,” Wambugu said.

The Jubilee Party has however distanced itself from the petition saying that Wambugu is acting in his private capacity.

On September 1 the Supreme Court voided the August 8 presidential election and the declaration of President Kenyatta as its winner after finding the petitioners had proved that the exercise was marred by irregularities and illegalities; the petitioners being Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka who came in second.
