EX-KPA boss Mulewa ordered to pay Sh74mn for ‘unexplainable assets’

Mulewa was sued by the then Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (now the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission) after it discovered suspicious deposits in his account and accumulation of some three parcels of land/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 21 – The High Court in Mombasa has ordered former Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director James Mulewa to pay the government Sh63 million and a further Sh11 million over unexplained immovable property he acquired during his tenure.

The amount according to the court’s ruling is cumulative bank deposits Mulewa made between August 2008 and May 2010.

Issuing the ruling, Justice Eric Ogola also declared some three parcels of land the troubled former MD used to own as unexplained assets.

Mulewa was sued by the then Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (now the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission) after it discovered suspicious deposits in his account and accumulation of some three parcels of land.

Mulewa was sacked from his post in early 2010 over graft charges after serving slightly for over one year.

In his defence, Mulewa whose salary was slightly above Sh1mn told the court that even a mere ports authority staff can be wealthy.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) which has been pursuing Mulewa since 2010 – when he was charged with abuse of office – moved to court to seek Mulewa’s “unexplained assets” totalling Sh80.6 million, forfeited to the government.
