NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 13 – Civil society organisations have served the Director of Public Prosecutions with a petition calling for the prosecution of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials accused of bungling last month’s presidential election.

The protesters under the Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu initiative, led by the International Commission of Jurists’ Njonjo Mue, first staged a demonstration to the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers on Wednesday where they handed a petition to Commissioner Roselyn Akombe, urging affected officials to quit.

“We present the petition before you with regards to necessity to investigate and prosecute election officials who undertook criminal activities that led to the nullification of the presidential election,” said Mue.

At the DPP’s office, their petition was received by the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Dorcas Oduor who assured them that necessary action will be taken on those found culpable.

“We accept this petition we shall study it and we shall take the necessary action, I want to assure you that the Office of the Public Prosecution is always concerned about the offences being committed and that’s why we are in touch with the investigative agencies so that we get concrete evidence,” said Oduor.

But even as they staged the demo, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati assured that the Commission was intact and is busy preparing for the fresh election, having submitted a budget of Sh12 billion to the Treasury for approval.
