NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 21 – Most Nairobi residents are confident that their new Governor Mike Sonko will transform the city after taking over from Evans Kidero.
Some of those who spoke to Capital FM News soon after Sonko’s inauguration like Daniel Waiganjo urged Sonko to get down to the business of delivering on the promises he made during the campaigns.
“Cleaning up the city and its environs should become Sonko’s priority now. The governor should, for instance, do something about the Dandora dumpsite that has become a menace for a long time now,” said Waiganjo.
Another resident, Tolly Tevai, said the newly elected governor should now prove to the county residents that he is different from his predecessor who handed over to him at Uhuru Park in a surprise turn, after announcing that he was set to challenge the results in court.
“Sonko now has the opportunity to prove himself as a leader who is true to his word. What Nairobi residents want to see is change. Sonko’s first order of business should be that of changing the negative perception people have towards the county askaris,” said Tevai.
Sonko, the immediate Nairobi Senator becomes the second Nairobi County Governor after defeating Evans Kidero in the August 8 gubernatorial election.
Sonko garnered 864,426 (53.47pc) votes against Kidero who got 693,329 (42.88pc) votes.
Another resident Elizabeth Njeri, is very certain that Sonko will ease the burden of city residents especially the youths through the creation of jobs.
“I am very proud of my new governor and I believe that he (Sonko) will be able to create jobs for the many unemployed youths in Nairobi. So far he has recruited youths to help in garbage collection in the city and for that I commend him,” said Njeri.

In his speech after taking the oath of office on Monday, Sonko assured his supporters and Nairobi residents that he will work towards changing the face of the Kenyan capital.
During the campaigns and in his manifesto, Sonko promised to focus on governance, housing and settlement, education and health, environment, traffic management and transport, jobs and social inclusion for the people of the Nairobi.
Sonko was sworn in on Monday at a ceremony attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto and several Cabinet Secretaries.
