NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 30 – Newly elected Members of Parliament under the National Super Alliance have unanimously agreed to attend Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony at Parliament buildings.

Speaking to the press on Friday last week during their second parliamentary group meeting, Moses Wetangula was non-committal on whether they would attend the first sitting of the 12th Parliament as called by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Many of them are fresh men and women in the House. They will proceed for their induction in Parliament,” Wetangula said on behalf of the group after their meeting.

The meeting which was attended by top NASA leadership led by Raila Odinga, his deputy Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Wetangula who also settled on having a retreat next week to forge a common agenda.

NASA is outnumbered in the National Assembly and the Senate by Jubilee Party legislators who are already angling to control both Houses.

“We are going to have a retreat most probably by the end of next week to deal with issues of leadership in the house, committees and their membership, and how our members are going to conduct their affairs,” Wetangula said.

The group that had met at the Okoa Kenya Secretariat in Lavington further emphasised fidelity to the NASA manifesto and avoid the temptation of crossing the floor to join the government side.

In the past, legislators who were elected on the opposition ticket have made the move to join the government’s side.

“We have advised our members that they must have fidelity to the NASA manifesto and temptations like crossing the floor to look for maendeleo are not things we are encouraging because we know how to get maendeleo without crossing the floor,” he emphasized.

Jubilee Party’s President Kenyatta chaired a Parliamentary Group meeting at State House where he endorsed Justin Muturi for National Assembly’s Speaker position and former Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka for the Senate Speaker’s seat.
