Dr Robert Ouko’s widow, Christabel, dies in accident

Her son, Ken, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend at the Muhoroni junction when the vehicle rolled several times/FILE

KISUMU, Kenya, Aug 21 – The widow of the late Cabinet Minister Dr Robert Ouko, Christabel, died following a road accident Monday on the Kisumu-Kericho highway.

Christabel was returning to her rural home in Muhoroni-Koru after attending the inauguration ceremony of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o when the accident occured.

She was being driven by her son, Ken, who lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend at the Muhoroni junction when the car rolled several times, according to police.

Good Samaritans rushed them to Siloam Private Hospital in Kericho, where Christabel died while receiving treatment.

According to Richard Okech, a project manager at the Ouko Community Initiative, the accident occurred at 2pm.

Okech said Christabel passed away three hours after being admitted to the hospital while Ken survived the accident and was admitted to the same facility where he was undergoing treatment Monday evening.

Dr Ouko, who served as Foreign Affairs Minister in former president Daniel arap Moi’s government was assassinated in 1990.

He was first reported missing and his charred remains were later be found by a local herder at the foot of Got Alila, which is barely 3 kilometers from his home.

The family transferred Christabel’s body from Kericho to the Aga Khan Hospital Mortuary in Kisumu.
