NYERI, Kenya, Jul 12 – Villagers at Kagati in Mathira are watching every hour keenly as Sunday approaches, when a suspected village thief will be ‘cornered.’

This is after a pub owner in the nearby shopping centre opted seek the services of a witch doctor to nab a thief after his pub was broken into and items stolen.

The process of tracking down the thief is manifested by a brown rooster that has been perching on the pub’s roof for four days now.

Villagers say they’ve learnt that the rooster will go round the roof of the pub in a clockwise direction after the days lapse, and the identity of the suspected will be revealed.

They said that conventional ways of curbing insecurity in the area have been unsuccessful claiming that security officials have done little to help them.

One of the villagers, Stephen Mwangi, complained they have suffered a lot from a group of armed thugs that terrorizes them both by stealing and even killing.

“The owner of this pub has suffered to the level of nearly closing down his business after it was broken into seven times. We are tired of this,” he said.

Mwangi claimed that the witchdoctor visited the place last weekend and promised to get results once the rooster goes round the roof of the house.

But a retired assistant chief from the area Clement Wandeto said the he could agree or disagree with this exercise, saying that he has adopted a wait-and-see approach in regard the matter.

“We have had many cases of serious insecurity in this area but I am not sure whether to agree with most people here that we should seek the services of a witchdoctor,” he said.

Tens of villagers are now milling around the scene on daily basis and not ready to disturb the peace of the rooster which though behaving normally, is said to go without feeding.

Of much interest is that the owner of the pub and who has sought pseudo means to get justice is said to be a police officer whose identity could not be immediately established.
