KERICHO, Kenya, Jun 15 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has said the August 8 elections will go ahead as planned and slammed the Opposition’s attempts to sabotage the election process.
The President said those leading the Opposition should forget any hopes of using a shortcut to lead the country and advised them to sell ideas that can convince Kenyans to support them.
President Kenyatta listed the systematic attempts by the Opposition to sabotage and create complications to delay the election to pave the way for a transitional government.
“Enough is enough. We will not accept their attempts to postpone the elections. We know their game but we will not allow Kenyans to be denied their democratic right to choose the leaders they want on the date stipulated by the Constitution,” said the President when he spoke to supporters in Kericho.
The President, who was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, said the Opposition’s scheme to derail the August polls is well documented starting with when they asked for a complete overhaul of commissioners of the IEBC.
He said Jubilee did not agree with the request but they allowed for the commissioners to be replaced.
“They went on making demands and the next thing they targeted was the BVR, then they went for secretariat, now they want to stop the printing of ballot papers,” said the President.
The Head of State made the statement as he was joined by Deputy President Ruto in leading Jubilee campaigns in the party’s support base of Kericho County.
The President said the opposition appears afraid because they have no agenda to sell to Kenyans and that was the main reason they were putting obstacle after obstacle to derail the elections.
Deputy President William Ruto said Jubilee was categorical that there will be no delay of the August 8 polls and that there would be no way the government will allow the opposition to create a crisis to necessitate a transitional government.
He said the obstacles the opposition was creating for the IEBC are all designed to delay the polls so that the opposition can ask for the creation of a coalition transitional government.
“If you want to lead Kenyans, you must go and ask for votes. You cannot trick or blackmail your way to rule the country,” said the DP.
The Deputy President said the Jubilee Party has no doubt that it enjoys overwhelming support and challenged the opposition to throw in the towel.
“Our friends know that they have no agenda and cannot face Kenyans to ask for votes. I would suggest to them to forget about this polls and start preparing for 2022 to face me then,” said the DP.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen speaking on the subject, said the hullaballoo about the printing of ballots was driven by greed for money by the leaders of the opposition.
Murkomen said Opposition leader Raila Odinga was bitter because he wanted and missed an opportunity to control the procurement processes at the IEBC.
“In 2007, he was the one who single sourced the BVR. Now all the noise he is making is because he missed an opportunity to control the tenders,” said the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator.
The leaders said Jubilee will not mind even if the opposition leaders were running the IEBC because it is Kenyans who will vote and not the commission.
The leaders spoke as they traversed Kericho County to mobilise voters ahead of the August polls.
The President and his Deputy started their tour at Kipsitet and Fort Ternan before driving through Londiani, Barsile, Chepseon and heading to Kericho town. After Kericho the President and his team will visit Kapsoit, Sosion, Sigowet, Roret, Cheborge and Litein before winding up their tour with a rally at the historic Kapkatet Grounds.
