MACHAKOS, Kenya, Jun 19 – Three people were killed and 10 others critically injured in an accident that occurred on Monday at 1130hrs at the Jam City area of Athi River along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The mid-morning accident involved a Passenger Service Vehicle that was ferrying passengers from Kitui to Nairobi when it collided head-on with a lorry that was headed to Mombasa from Nairobi.
Athi River Police boss Shama Wario said the matatu driver was over speeding and wanted to overtake the lorry leading to a head-on collision with the lorry.
The OCPD added that those injured in the accident were rushed to Shalom Community Hospital for treatment.
The matatu driver is among the three who died on spot.
There has been an increase in road accidents along the stretch between Mlolongo and Machakos Junction since last week, raising concerns on road safety rules enforcement.
Just last week, four bodyguards attached to Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s wife, were killed when their vehicle collided with another one.
