NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 26 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to create 6.5 million jobs in his second term should he be re-elected.

Speaking during a colourful ceremony at the Kasarani stadium where he launched his manifesto, President Kenyatta said employment creation is at the heart of the next Jubilee administration’s priorities.

The Jubilee Party presidential flag-bearer says he and his team plan on creating 1.3 million jobs every year while creating partnerships with county governments to establish at least one industry in every county.

The President’s focus will be on the youth, through programmes that can allow them to secure and maintain good jobs that enable them to enjoy a decent life.

“Our commitment to the people of Kenya is to continue to work with all Kenyans to build on these strong foundations, to create more and better jobs, to raise the living standards of every Kenyan, reduce inequality and to lift even more Kenyans out of poverty. Together, we will ensure sustainable development and shared prosperity for all Kenyans in a prosperous, caring Kenya,” he said.

During his first term, President Kenyatta’s government boasts of overseeing the expansion of youth empowerment programmes through the provision of low interest loans to youth owned enterprises to enable them to grow their businesses.

“Sh42.8 billion has been awarded to youth, women and people with disabilities through the 30 per cent procurement Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) benefitting close to 40,000 businesses and 200,000 people in the supply chain,” the Jubilee Party noted in its manifesto.

In the next five years, President Kenyatta says his administration intends to “establish a Youth Development Council to coordinate all youth activities and facilitate the training, skills building and mentoring to link young people with emerging internships and job opportunities.”

The President also pledges to establish the Biashara Bank to provide coordination in the delivery of affordable financing and support for business development.

The Jubilee Party has promised to spearhead the implementation of the Ajira Platform which will ensure every young person seeking employment is identified by carrying out a continuous ward, constituency and county level registration.

“Linking training and skills building to jobs, we will attach every youth registered through the Ajira Platform to a specific public or infrastructure project,” reads the manifesto.

In a bid to create more opportunities for employment for youth employment, the Jubilee Party has pledged to transform the National Youth Service into an agency that can to implement commercial projects in Kenya and abroad.

During the first term, the Jubilee Party brags of increasing the number of young people recruited through the National Youth Service (NYS) from 4,000 in 2013 to 37,005 in 2016.

According to the President, a second term for him will see the expansion in the participation of young people in national development through the enforcement of the 30 per cent affirmative action in all public appointments, projects and budgets.

“In the next five years we will: encourage organisations to recruit interns by expanding the tax incentive framework and prepare highly talented young people to work in the Public Service by introducing a Young Professionals Management Programme,” the manifesto stated.
