Father, mother, 6-month-old baby and Form 3 student drown in Lake Victoria

Kisumu Town West MP Olago Aluoch had previously raised concern about the high number drownings in the lake, calling on the Kenya Red Cross and Kenya Maritime Authority to cooperate in building the capacity of those who drive their boats out onto its waters/FILE

KISUMU, Kenya, Jun 12 – Four people including a husband, his wife and their six-months-old child drowned in Lake Victoria after their boat capsized in Sirongo beach, Bondo Sub County on Sunday evening.

Four other people were rescued by local fishermen who were nearby.

The eight family members had boarded a small boat from Sifu Island and were coming back when the incident occurred.

A local chief, Michael Osare, said witness testimony was that the boat split, causing it to capsize.

A form three student also drowned during the incident.

He says the four survivors managed to hang on the broken boat before they were rescued by fishermen who were nearby.

Only the body of the child had been retrieved with the search for the three others still on.

As has become tradition, the survivors will have to camp by the lakeside until all three missing bodies are retrieved.
