NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30 – Presidential candidate Mohammed Abdub Dida has moved to court to stop the presidential debate slated for July 10th and 24th.
Dida in his suit papers claims the presidential debates guidelines are discriminatory, in bad faith and contrary to the Constitution.
He says it is in the interest of justice that the entire presidential candidates be afforded same status as provided by the law when outlining their visions for the country.
According to Dida, his rights have been violated for being subjected to guidelines that treat him as a second class presidential candidate.
He now wants the Court to declare that all presidential candidates are equal with regards to articulating their manifestos and during public debates.
Debate Media Limited and the Media Council of Kenya have been named as respondents in the case.
The sessions will take place at 7.30pm at Catholic University of Eastern Africa. The running mates’ debate is scheduled to take place on July 17 at the same time.
Organisers of the debates, say they meant to help voters make informed choices, promote national cohesion and steering campaigns towards the quality of leadership rather than personalities.
The debate is organized by Debates Media Ltd, a consortium of several Kenyan media houses.
