NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 13 – Two children and a female adult were found alive Tuesday evening in the ongoing rescue operation in Embakasi East, where a seven-storey building collapsed.

The daylong operation remained delicate after five people were reported missing, according to the National Disaster Management Unit Deputy Director Pius Masai.

Among those listed as missing was a mother and her three children, who were found alive however the woman is said to have passed on moments after according to the Kenya Red Cross.

Reports said police asked tenants to evacuate the building on Monday night after cracks were noticed.

Even though most moved out quickly, some were not as responsive.

Cases of buildings collapsing have been frequent, with city residents accusing the Nairobi County Government of failing to carry out its duty of ensuring safety of constructions.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Tuesday defended the county, saying some buildings were constructed without approval and that efforts to demolish them had been frustrated by court orders.
