Presidential candidates to submit names of 2,000 supporters from Thursday

According to the electoral body, they should present the names of at least 2,000 supporters in the next five days, at Anniversary Towers both electronically and on print/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 17 – Presidential candidates taking part in the August General Election are expected to start submitting their lists of supporters to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from Thursday.

According to the electoral body, they should present the names of at least 2,000 supporters in the next five days, at Anniversary Towers both electronically and on print.

Following this, all the candidates will attend pre-nomination meetings on May 23 at venues to be communicated by the Commission.

Afterwards, the presidential candidates have to submit their nomination papers for clearance to the Commission at Kenyatta International Conference Centre between 28 – 29 of this month.

For the County Assembly Ward Representative and National Assembly positions independent candidates and political party aspirants have to submit their nomination papers for clearance to the Commission’s Returning Officers at the constituency level between June 1 and 2, 2017.

For the Senate, Gubernatorial and Woman Representatives posts independent candidates and political party aspirants have to submit their nomination papers for clearance to the Commission’s Returning Officers at the County level between 28 May and June 2, 2017.

The Commission shall thereafter, in line with Article 88 (4) (f) of the Constitution, register qualified candidates for election and indicate those disqualified.

Disputes relating to or arising from registration of candidates shall be determined within ten (10) days of the lodging of the dispute with the Commission.
