ODM rally in Migori ends in disarray as rival supporters clash

MIGORI, Kenya, Apr 3 – An Orange Democratic rally at Posta Grounds in Migori flopped after supporters of Governor Zachary Okoth Obado and gubernatorial candidate Ochillo Ayacko clashed.

The rally was to be addressed by ODM deputy party leader and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.

Trouble started when Obado made his way into the podium against the wishes of Ayacko’s supporters.

Chaos erupted as police and politicians’ bodyguards started shooting into the air to disperse the rowdy supporters.

It’s during this time that bodyguard to a politician from Coast region was accidentally shot was rushed to hospital with injuries.

The political leaders were hurriedly whisked to safety as the meeting ended in disarray.

The meeting was to be addressed by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, in his capacity as the ODM deputy party leader.

Joho said his vehicle was hit by two bullets “which left one of our body guards shot and wounded in the leg.”

“We believe that the events of today (Monday) are part of a growing pattern of the politically motivated attacks and intolerance that we have witnessed in recent days even though until today, those attacks have mostly been verbal,” Joho said in a statement sent to newsrooms late Monday.

“This pattern must be arrested before it escalates out of control,” he said, and called for “thorough investigations and bringing of perpetrators to justice.
