MPs set to meet Kaimenyi over Swazuri ouster

Kaimenyi, Maina and Swazuri’s colleagues at the NLC are expected to meet the Departmental Lands Committee which is investigating bribery accusations against Swazuri brought forward by a former journalist Mugo Njeru/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 – Lands Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi, Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina and National Lands Commission (NLC) Commissioners are due before the National Assembly Lands Committee Monday over the removal of NLC Chair Mohammed Swazuri.

Kaimenyi, Maina and Swazuri’s colleagues at the NLC are expected to meet the Departmental Lands Committee which is investigating bribery accusations against Swazuri brought forward by a former journalist, Mugo Njeru.

According to Njeru, Swazuri demanded a bride of Sh1.2 million upon payment of compensation for land which the government acquired for the Standard Gauge Railway project along Mombasa Road.

The petitioner disclosed that Swazuri received Sh1 million through an aide identified as Badhili Elijah alias Charo who is said to have received the said monies in Mombasa in December 2015.

It remains unclear however if Swazuri will appear before the committee given that he secured orders Wednesday from the High Court barring the committee from proceeding with the matter.

In his order after hearing the matter certified as agent, Justice John Mutivo directed that the hearing of the petition be halted pending the determination of the matter.

The judge also ordered Swazuri’s lawyers to serve suit papers upon the parliamentary committee to facilitate an inter-partes hearing on April 11.
