Bomet East MP loses seat to new entrant as Jubilee results trickle in

Kones beat her closest rivals incumbent MP Bett Bernard and Majaliwa Jonathan who garnered 5,733 and 4,931 votes respectively/MOSES MUOKI

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25 – Beatrice Kones is the official torch bearer of the Jubilee Party in Bomet East constituency after winning Tuesday’s nominations with 8,700 votes.

Kones beat her closest rivals incumbent MP Bett Bernard and Majaliwa Jonathan who garnered 5,733 and 4,931 votes respectively.

Also declared winner is Kosgei Kipkoech who won the Sotik constituency ticket bagging 9,790 votes.

Kipkoech’s main challengers were Sigei Francis (8,495) and Ng’etich Cecilia (4,369).

The incumbent Sotik legislator is seeking to unseat Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto with whom a recently released poll shows are in a neck-and-neck race.

The Keiyo South constituency seat went to Daniel Rono who managed 14,450 votes.

His key opponent Gideon Kimaiyo followed with 11,354 votes with Wilson Kipsang getting 3,621 votes.

The Marakwet East ticket was clinched by Kipsang’ Kipkemoi who got a total of 10,587 votes.

Samule Cheboi came in second with 6,736 votes followed by Sammy Letema who got 4,986.

While releasing the results, the party’s National Elections Board Chairperson Andrew Musangi said nominations in Mount Elgon constituency in Bungoma County had been deferred following delays occasioned by the amount of time taken by aspirants and their agents to audit voting materials.

“The aspirants and officials in Mt Elgon decided to go for a full scale audit and one they’d reached the confidence that the materials were sufficient to start off unfortunately they’d consumed quite a bit of the voting time,” Musangi said.

“Taking account the size of the constituency, we consulted the aspirants and taking into account the size of the constituency it was agreed to defer voting to tomorrow (Wednesday),” he noted.

Musangi said the tally for various elective seats will commence once the results from the constituency are transmitted, urging voters in Mount Elgon to turn up for the exercise on Wednesday.

“Naturally this hitch has meant we adjust we adjust our position on the constituency and so all voters are urged to turn up early because all materials are on ground,” he said adding that the party will conclude the entire process in Bungoma “very smoothly on Wednesday”.
