Club Click owner gets 5 years in jail for killing reveller

Jackson Maina Wangui, the proprietor of Club Click, was handed the sentence after trial judge Stella Mutuku found him guilty of manslaughter/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 22 – The owner of a nightclub on Nairobi’s Baricho Road has been jailed for five years for killing a reveller five years ago.

Jackson Maina Wangui the proprietor of Club Click was handed the sentence after trial judge Stella Mutuku found him guilty of manslaughter.

The court handed Miana the prison term for manslaughter, after the prosecution failed to prove the more severe charge of murder, for killing Kelvin Oduor Onyango on the night of May 8 2012.

The court however acquitted his co-accused, Julius Sepi, a bouncer at the club for lack of evidence over his participation in the murder.

“I find that the second accused person was not involved having left Maina and Onyango at the rooftop,” the judge declared.

While handing the verdict, Justice Mutuku said that evidence adduced in court sufficiently proved that he frog-marched the deceased to the rooftop of the building.

“The court doubts that the accused took the patron upstairs to kill him but is convinced that he shot him at point blank range,” Justice Mutuku noted.

In his defence, Maina claimed he accidentally fired at the reveller after he attacked him but the court held that justice must be served.

Through lawyer Proven Bowery, the businessman pleaded for leniency saying he was remorseful because he had no intention to shoot the deceased.

Justice Mutuku heard that Maina, a family man is the sole breadwinner, a father of two children and is expecting a third one later in the year.
