NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 – University teaching staff have vowed to continue with their strike after talks with the government collapsed on Thursday last week.
University Academic Staff Union Secretary General Constantine Wasonga says learning remain paralysed in all public universities and has refuted claims that students are being taught in some institutions.
“Go those Universities, the last time when I was here (Maseno University) I only found monkeys running under these trees. This is not propaganda wars, let’s deal with the reality on the ground. You only find monkeys in those classrooms.”
UASU recently rejected a Sh10 billion offer from the Inter Public Universities Consultative Council Forum, saying it was far below the expectations of their members.
“So far, I don’t think negotiations are going on. They collapsed,” he said on Monday. “The negotiations collapsed on Thursday because we expected IPUCCF to give a new counter offer.”
Under the counter-proposal, they were set to get a 3.2 per cent pay increase and a 1.6 per cent increment on house allowance, but they insist on nothing less than 30 per cent increase in salaries which will see the highest paid academician take home Sh1 million.
“The CBA we want is composed of so many things…one is basic salary, house allowance, mortgage and car loan while we also want the people who supervise PHDs and master’s degrees to be paid,” he said.
“University staff are being overworked and are underpaid.”
